Derek is Mr. Fix-it. From welding puppy pens to constructing a flatbed to building a dog box, Derek has been instrumental in helping grow the kennel. He helps with all the behind-the-scenes projects and makes sure the kennel runs smoothly. He’s also Ryne’s handler for all her mid-distance and thousand-mile races.
In the summers, Derek works for Alaska Fire Service as a smokejumper. When not working, Derek is flying, trapping, or hunting with Jezzy, our Wirehaired Pointing Griffon.
His first race was the 2014 Chatanika 100. He realized that racing isn’t quite for him and prefers just exploring the backcountry.
